High blood pressure is medically defined as a condition in which your blood pressure is elevated to a chronic level, way beyond the normal. When a doctor obtains your blood pressure, it will be measured using two numbers; the result is usually given as “X over Y.” For example, your blood pressure could be 120 over 80. Written, it is 120/80 mmHG, which is millimeters of mercury. The first figure is referred to as the systolic blood pressure.
